The U.S. Department of Education proclaims March as “Arts in Our Schools Month''. Dedicating a month to arts education gives students a chance to appreciate how important dance, music, theatre, and the visual arts are within their schooling and overall development. In 2019, New Jersey became the first state in the nation to provide universal access to arts education for all public-school students.
While we celebrate this milestone, as dance educators, we also recognize that only 9% of NJ schools offer dance programs. We are proud to say that Trenton Public Schools is a leader in providing our students with access to dance. As four dance teachers, we represent dance programs across three of our schools: Grace A. Dunn Middle School, Hedgepeth-Williams Middle School, and Trenton Central High School. To honor “Dance in Our Schools Month”, we have collaborated to present snapshots of what dance looks like in our schools, but more importantly we have captured the impact that dance has on our students. We invite you to tune in on Wednesday, March 31 at 12:30pm for the premiere of Dance in Our Schools Month: Celebrating Dance in Trenton Public Schools.
